Today we have a very special Finally Friday brought to you by our lovely SP Diva Danielle! Danielle is amazing with altered art which is what we are talking about today!
As mostly a scrapbooker and cardmaker, I don't know hardly anything about Altered projects so I asked Danielle to give us an Altering for beginners lesson and here it is:
Altering is something I can NOT live without!!
Wether it is something as easy as taking a coffee can and turning it into a pencil holder, or as dynamic as altered art, like collageing, I just HAVE to do it!!
One of my easiest tricks is using sand paper. I actually buy those rectagular nail buffers and use them. I just think everything looks better if it is sanded!! I sand ALL my cards, scrapbook pages, and even photos!! I think sanding gives everything you do an aged look.
Then, another thing I always do is distress with ink. I use any inks, but I use a "special" brush!! I like to use a brush, that really is a sponge, I think? It looks like a sponge with a handle. Then, I can dab (little areas at a time), rub (literally rub the ink all over the place), or pounce (lots of harder little areas). I think sanding and inking together is FAB!!
The last thing I want to tell you about, is NOT having to use photos on your cards and scrapbook pages. MADNESS you say!!! But true!! I love finding vintage post cards, pictures or really interesting stamps in place of pictures. When using vintage finds, or inked and stamped images, your altering work can really shine! It allows your newly acquired altering skills to be showcased too!!
So, last tips:
Never measure!! an educated guess is fine!
Try not to use scissors unless you REALLY have to. Tearing is much better!!
And always remember, LAYER EVERYTHING!!!
Danielle's Finally Friday Challenge: ALTER SOMETHING!!! Go out there and find something to alter and give altering a try!!
